Every successful project manager is in a leadership position and is required to continuously improve or maintain strong leadership and interpersonal skills to get the job done effectively and efficiently. One of my favorite professional development topics is leadership. For several years, I have been a virtual mentee of author and leadership trainer, John C. Maxwell. I would recommend adding to your personal library his book entitled, “The 360 Degree Leader – Developing Your Influence from Anywhere in the Organization”. Read More..
Simple Communication Skills Are Essential Tools for Project Management Effectiveness
By Vanessa Brown, PhD, PMP
As a former classroom teacher, I was stuck in a “teacher-cantered instructional mode” for over 15 years. This was an essential skill taught in college in order to delver vast amounts of information to students, but eventually led to my developing insufficient listening skills. This hindered by ability to communicate effectively with colleagues, as I transitioned into project management...Read More..

Answer to PMP Question of the Month: B.PMBOK® Guide Appendix G, Section G.2; and page 232, Section 93.2.3.
Q&As for the PMBOK® Guide Fourth Edition by PMI, page 96 & 219.
Team Building
Team building is the process of helping a group of individuals, bound by a common sense of purpose, to work interdependently with each other, the leader, external stakeholders, and the organization. The result of good leadership and good team building is teamwork.
Team-building activities consist of tasks (establish goals, define, and negotiate roles and procedures) and processes (interpersonal behavior with emphasis on communication, conflict management, motivation, and leadership). Developing a team environment involves handling project team problems and discussing these as team issues without placing blame on individuals. Team building can be further enhanced by obtaining top management support, encouraging team member commitment, introducing appropriate rewards, recognition and ethics, creating a team identity, managing conflicts effectively, promoting trust and open communication among team members, and providing leadership.
Team-Building Activities
One of the most important skills in developing a team environment involves handling project team problems and discussing these as team issues. The entire team should be encouraged to work collaboratively to resolve these issues. To build effective project teams, project managers should obtain top management support, obtain commitment of team members, introduce appropriate rewards and recognition, create a team identity, manage conflicts effectively, promote trust and open communication among team members, and, above all, provide good team leadership.

The Two Minute Project Manager
Robert J. Morgan, PMP
Concerning Progressive Elaboration
Years ago, I worked for a Manager who declared to our team, “In developing your tasks, don’t let the ‘Good Enough’ stand in the way of the Perfect...” I recall thinking, what does that mean? An experienced IT Professional, “Charlie F.” was quite adept at Process Development, Project Management, and Process Engineering. In his experience, if one waits for a thing to be perfect before submission, one is late and therefore loses. Experience had taught him this. Read More..
