June Dinner Meeting Recap
David Po-Chedley Discusses How to Strengthen Your Project Team

Thanks to everyone who attended our June 1st PMI Dinner to hear David Po-Chedley give his presentation, No Bull Project Management: Dealing with the Politics and People Issues that Bring Projects Down

Dave has over 30 years experience in Project Management.  He is a Principal at Cambridge Consulting, a firm dedicated to enhancing project effectiveness for clients around the world. He is also a Board Member at Pioneer Aerospace, a producer of deceleration equipment to NASA, the U.S. Army and a number of foreign governments.

Our evening started off opening remarks from our new Chapter President, Clayton Feria and new Director of Events, Linda Moore. Clayton showcased the chapter's upcoming events:

Clayton Faria, New President

  • 7/13 David Po-Chedley, Project Management Relationships (8:30am - 5pm, DeVry)
  • 8/3   August Dinner Meeting - Anthony Reed, Preventing Scope Creep From Destroying Your  Project (6-8:30pm, Sonesta)
  • 8/4  Anthony Reed, Debts and Credits for Project Managers (TBD, DeVry).
After the chapter updates, our speaker gave a great presentation on what effective project leaders do that positively attract management’s attention and help to gain management support. These are the No-Bull practices that work in the real world:

1.     Position your project as a strategic investment. By pinpointing the tie-in between your project and the company’s direction you will be seen as not only as a team player but also as a loyal supporter for the company’s business philosophy.

2.     Define success and get out of the way. Micro Managers get in the way. Leaders define success and get out of the way.

3.     Be easy to do business with. The #1 management value is responsiveness. Effective project managers make it easy for executives to get the answers they need-quickly and easily.

4.     Practice No-Bull Communications. Much of the bull in organizations is the result of fuzzy, misdirected communications.

5.     Promote ideas and involvement; reward results. People support what they help create. A credible network adds wind to the windmill.

6.     Have Fun and get a lot Done. Leaders create energy and high performance teams. They realize that you can have fun AND run an effective, profitable business.

The presentation was very informative and we encourage those interested in learning more to attend Dave’s next event on July 13, Project Management Relationships at DeVry.

At the end of the night Leland E. Krausewon our 2-day seminar raffle from Seminars WorldDave has over 30 years experience in Project Management.  He is a Principal at Cambridge Consulting, a firm dedicated to enhancing project effectiveness for clients around the world. He is also a Board Member at Pioneer Aerospace, a producer of deceleration equipment to NASA, the U.S. Army and a number of foreign governments.

PMICFC Board Members Attend
the Region 14 Leadership Conference

But, what is the Region 14 Leadership Conference?

Earlier this month five PMICFC Board members attended the PMI Region 14 Leadership Conference. PMI Region 14 includes 25 individual Chapters, representing 14,288 members. Many of these Chapters are facing some of the same issues the Central Florida Chapter is facing, so this was a great opportunity for each of us to learn from each other.

There were several breakout sessions covering the following areas:

Professional Development Membership
Finance Technology
Marketing Strategic Planning
Fiduciary Responsibilities Programs and Best Practices
Engaging Business Community Communication Strategies for Relationship Maintenance
Chapter Metrics/Scorecards/Surveys Organizing an International Conference
Chapter Revitalization Successful Academic Outreach Programs

Guest speakers included Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of PMI, Mark Langley, John Stenbeck, PMP who is an adjunct Lecturer for the University of California in San Diego and Cindy Margules, PMP with PM Transformations, a Project Management consulting firm in Texas.

Mark Langley brought insight from the PMI perspective. He spoke of the importance of each PMI Member learning and using the PMBOK as a guide to leadership. There are other Project Managment certifications, but he believes that PMBOK is the strongest and it takes each member working with it's principles to keep it strong.

One strong presentation was when Cindy Margules, PMP demonstrated the importance of two-way communication. She had several volunteers follow her instructions with their eyes closed. Although the instructions were very simple, there were several variations in the results. Please see the picture below, or click on the image for a closer look at the results. The take-away is that you should make sure that the person you are communicating with understands what you are saying before they act on your information. Please click on the picture below to see how simple instructions can be misunderstood without two-way communication.
